Reasons To Make Your Own Seasoning From Scratch

    • Why buy it when you can make it for a lot less?!
    • You control what goes in it.
    • You can double or triple the quantity to suit your cooking needs.
    • You say how much salt to add.
    • No MSG, preservatives, or additives.

    💰 Saving Dinero Tip

The spice aisle at the grocery has fancy containers with dried spices. Buy one and refill it from the Mexican spices area. They usually come in plastic bags (see above) and are a lot cheaper than the ones in plastic bottles. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Español. The names of the spices are usually in both Spanish and English.

A bag of El Guapo ground arbol chili is placed on a wooden surface next to a plate with various ground spices in different colors. The chili bag is labeled as "Chile de Arbol Molido" with a net weight of 1 oz (28g).

    🔥 Spice It Up

    • REALLY HOT: If you can handle your spice, add 1 teaspoon ground chile de arbol to the recipe.
    • Hot: Add ½ teaspoon ground chile de arbol.
    • Mildly Spicy: Add ½ teaspoon ground chile california
    • Can’t find chile de arbol? Substitute with ground cayenne.
A white bowl filled with a mixed spice blend, featuring shades of brown. A spoon is partially submerged in the spices, resting against the bowl's edge. The bowl is on a rustic wooden surface.

    🫙 Storing Instructions

Place the mixture in an airtight container and in a dark place. Keep away from light, heat, and moisture. Over time, the seasoning mix will lose its flavor and color. Try to use it within 6 months to a year for maximum flavor.

    👩🏼‍🍳 How To Use It

    • As A Dry Rub: For two pounds of chicken, use two tablespoons of the blend. Once the spices are mixed together, lightly coat chicken legs, breast, or thighs with olive oil then sprinkle generously with the seasoning. Bone in or boneless chicken, whatever you prefer. This blend works great as Chicken Fajitas .
    • To Use As A Marinade: Place 2 lbs chicken, 2 tablespoon of the chicken taco seasoning, 2 tablespoon olive oil, and ½ cup white distilled vinegar (or lime juice) to a large sealable bag. Marinade for 1 hour to overnight.
A spoon holds a heap of brown spice blend above a white plate with a gold rim. The plate also has a spread of the same spice mix, creating a circular pattern on a rustic wooden surface.
