    What Are Tostones Chips?

Tostones chips are crunchy slices of green plantains that are fried twice. They’re a popular Latin American snack and are often served with dips, sea salt, or hot sauce.

    How To Make Tostones Chips

    • Peel the plantains, then slice into 1 inch thick pieces.
    • Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan over medium heat.
    • Add the plantain and fry them for about 4-5 minutes until golden. Remove from the oil and place on a sheet of paper towel.
    • Use the back of a cup to flatten each plantain. The flattened plantains need to be fried a second time until golden brown.
    • Remove from the oil and place on a plate with lined paper towel to drain excess oil.

    👩🏼‍🍳 Best Oil For Frying

    • For frying, opt for oils with high smoke points and a neutral flavor.
    • Such as canola oil, vegetable oil, and peanut oil.

    Storing Instructions

Place any leftover chips in an airtight container or plastic bag with the air removed. Store in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. To reheat, place in the air fryer or bake at 350°F for a few minutes to restore crunch.

    🙋🏻‍♀️ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fried plantains and tostones?

Tostones are slices of green, unripened plantains that are fried, smashed, and then fried again until they’re crispy and golden. Fried plantains are made with yellow, ripened plantains and fried only once.

What’s the difference between plantains and bananas?

Plantains are starchy and less sweet than bananas. They’re usually cooked before eating. Bananas are yellow and sweet. They don’t require cooking before eating.

Are tostones chips sweet or savory?

Tostones are savory because they’re made from green, unripe plantains.

    How do you eat tostones?

In Southern Mexico, if you buy them from a liquor store, they will offer to put hot sauce on them. You can eat them with dips like guacamole or mayo, or serve them as a side dish with meat or seafood.

    Are tostones gluten-free?

Yes! Tostones are naturally gluten-free since they’re made from just plantains and oil.
