Agua de Fresa (or Strawberry Agua Fresca) is so incredibly YUMMY!

Going to the ice cream shop in Mexico is a BIG treat. A huge assortment of paletas (popsicles) and a variety of agua frescas side by side.

Both are so tempting and equally delicious. It’s SO hard to choose!

You’re sure to find this drink there. Sweet and creamy. Think strawberry milkshake.. Yum!

    INGREDIENTS

The ingredients for Strawberry Agua Fresca labeled and laid out on a wooden surface.

    • Strawberries
    • Water
    • Sweetened Condensed Milk
    • Evaporated Milk
    • Sugar (if necessary)

    Water or Milk?

At the ice cream shop, they will ask you if you want the water or the milk kind. This is Agua de Fresa con leche, or with milk.

For the water version, simply omit the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. Blend the fruit with sugar and water.

    Serve and enjoy.

    INSTRUCTIONS

A collage showing how to make Strawberry Agua Fresca.

    • Wash and remove all the stems from the strawberries
    • Place them in a blender.
    • Add the evaporated milk.
    • Pour in the sweetened condensed milk.
    • Add 1 cup of water.

Most agua fresca recipes blend the fruit and strain before adding the water, but since this is the creamy version, there is no need to strain.

    Evaporated milk substitutes:

You can use 1 cup regular milk or 1 cup heavy cream.

    Is agua fresca alcoholic?

Traditionally, no, they are not alcoholic beverages. They can be if alcohol is added. You can add tequila, vodka, even rum.

A hand holding down the lid of a blender that is blending the strawberry mixture.

    • Blend until smooth.
    • Add more water if necessary.

    PRO TIP:

If you have a smaller blender, blend in batches. Pour everything into a larger container and stir. The end result will be the same.

A collage showing how to mix the strawberry mixture with the water in a large pitcher.

    • Pour the strawberry mixture into a large pitcher.
    • Add the remaining water.

Give everything a big stir to combine.

Remember, this drink contains dairy and needs to be stored in the fridge. You don’t want anyone getting sick.

    Ice Ice Baby!

You can add ice cubes now. However, if you don’t serve it right away, it will dilute the mixture.

Best to add ice and pour the beverage individually into each cup.

A hand holding a white measuring cup filled with sugar over a large pitcher.

    • Add sugar, if necessary.

This step depends completely on the strawberries you use. If they are ripe, then you might not need sugar at all.

Taste it! If it needs sugar, add some sugar. Start small. About ½ cup. Stir, then taste again. Keep adding until you are satisfied with the way it tastes.

    Sugar Substitutes:

Use Stevia, coconut sugar, agave nectar, or honey are all good substitutes for regular sugar.

Is agua fresca good for you?

Yes and no. It depends on how it is made. If lots of sugar was added to the drink, then most likely not. However, agua frescas are made with fruit and provide a good source of Vitamin C and support healthy skin.

    How Long Does It Last?

In the fridge, agua fresca lasts up to 3 days.

Agua de Fresa (or Strawberry Agua Fresca) is exactly what you need this summer. Pour this DELICIOUS drink into a glass with lots of ice and enjoy!

I can’t wait to make this for my family. I used to love that strawberry milk powder, but I knew it was full of preservatives. Now I can have my favorite milk again!

I’m going to make this tomorrow! I have a big box of fresh strawberries and I wanted to find an alternative to blending them with vanilla yoghurt, which is my go to way of eating them up. So glad I came across this!

It was delicious!!! I don’t have evaporated milk here but I just added some full-fat milk. May have gotten the proportions a bit off but it was utterly delicious nonetheless!!
