Making this traditional agua fresca at home allows you to control the amount of sugar. So much better than soft drinks and perfect for Cinco de Mayo.

I love sipping on Agua de Tamarindo and this “mango water” on hot days. I’m sure you will too!

    Ingredients

The ingredients needed to make Agua de Mango labeled and sitting on a marble surface.
    • Peeled and chopped ripe fresh mangos
    • Sugar (to taste)
    • Water
    • Ice cubes

The type of sweetener and sugar content to use is up to you: cane sugar, Stevia, honey or nothing at all.

Sometimes, I find that the fruit is sweet enough and don’t add any sugar.

Aqua frescas are to Mexico and Central America what lemonade is to Americans – a super popular cold refreshing drink most often enjoyed during summer months.

    Instructions

Blending mango, water, and sugar in a food processor.

Place the peeled & diced mango, sugar, and water in your blender or food processor.

    Process or blend until smooth.

Pour the mango mixture into a large pitcher. Serve over lots of ice.

    Adjusting the sweetness

    • Taste the sweetness for good measure.
    • Add more sugar, if needed.
    • If it’s too sweet, add more water.
    • Do this little by little until you reach a sweetness you like.

    Pro Tips

Yes. You can refrigerate/ freeze this drink.

Although it’s best to serve immediately, it can be refrigerated for 72 hours. It can last in the freezer for up to 6 months.

    How to choose ripe mangos?

It’s all about the squeeze test to find ripe fruit at your grocery store. A ripe mango should give a little to the touch. That indicates it’s ready to eat or blend.

    Garnish

Add lime wedges to this fruity drink for extra color and a flavorful twist. Fresh mint is also great.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How are Mexican mangoes different?

Mangoes were first introduced to Mexico from the Philippines in the 1700s. Mexican growers raise a wide variety of these favorite fruits including Kent, Haden (red skin with traces of green and yellow), Atauifo (“honey mangoes”), Tommy Atkins, Keitt, Cirillo, and Petacon.

How is mango juice different from mango water?

Agua fresca is a blend of water and fresh fruit so it’s a lighter version of fruit juice.

What types of mangoes can you use for this agua fresca?

There are so many varieties that you can’t go wrong using any of them. Just adjust the amount of sugar accordingly.

How do you use frozen mangoes?

Using a frozen mango is a great option for when the fresh fruit is out of season. Thaw them overnight in the fridge. Frozen mangoes will release more liquid when you blend them so you may have to adjust the amount of water that you use.

    When are mangoes in season?

This varies by state in the United States – March to November in Hawaii, June through September in California, and May through August in South Florida. Of course, mangoes from Mexico and other countries make this fruit available all year in most parts of the country.

Mangoes are a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, as well as dietary fiber. All of these nutrients are essential for supporting a healthy immune system, vibrant skin, and a happy digestive system.
