What is a hot chocolate bomb?

In a nutshell, a hot chocolate bomb is made of melted chocolate, hot chocolate mix, and marshmallows.

When warm milk is poured over it, marshmallows magically appear right before your eyes, and you end up with a decadent cup of hot cocoa.
This is the best way to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate!

Now, we’re taking it up a notch and decorating it to make it look like Disney’s favorite character, Mickey Mouse!

The ingredients and items necessary to make the cocoa bombs.

    What You Need

    1. Chocolate Almond Bark
    2. Red candy melt
    3. Yellow candy melt
    4. Hot chocolate mix
    5. Mini marshmallows
    6. Regular-size marshmallows
    7. Round silicone mold

There are several ways to make them, but the basic ingredients include:
Melted chocolate, hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, and a semi-sphere silicone mold.

You can also get creative and add other ingredients like chocolate chips and candies.

Here, we are decorating them with melted candy to create Mickey.

Chocolate in a red silicone molds.

    • Melt the chocolate.
    • Pour into the mold to harden.

Originally, I saw the video on TikTok then a million times over on Facebook.

Immediately, I had to go to Amazon and buy the round silicone mold. Someone said that Amazon can’t keep them in stock.

Just in case, these round silicone molds are good to use too.

    • Cover the marshmallows with melted chocolate.
    • Allow to dry on parchment paper.

    Hot Chocolate Bomb Tips

    • Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time. Stir in intervals until smooth. Be sure not to overcook the chocolate.
    • Use the back of a spoon to smooth out any air bubbles.
    • Fingers leave fingerprints. Use gloves to prevent this.
    • The chocolate needs to be completely hard before making the bombs.
    • Chocolate melts easily. Store in an airtight container to avoid melting from happening.

    • Melt the red candy and place in a piping bag.
    • Draw a line down the middle of the circle then fill in with the melted red candy.
    • Allow to dry completely before adding the yellow candy melt for the buttons.

    How to Store

    • Room Temperature:
Hot chocolate bombs can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks. They can also be stored individually packaged. Store them in a dry place like in the pantry and away from the sun.

    • Refrigerator:
This is not ideal for chocolate because moisture and condensation can form in the fridge.

    • Freezer:
The problem with this version is when you’re thawing the chocolate, moisture and condensation can form, causing the chocolate to call apart. Another thing to know is that freezer scents and flavors can go into the chocolate.

Two pictures showing the inside and how to cover the chocolate bombs.

    • Add the hot chocolate mix and marshmallows to one of the chocolate circles.
    • Once the bomb is completely dry melt down the bottom part of the chocolate covered marshmallows
    • Place both ends together while the chocolate is still hot.

When your molds arrive from the store, wash them and dry them completely before using.

Another thing, if you’ve used the molds once, sometimes residue will adhere. This will leave marks on the chocolate. Wash, rinse, repeat.

    • Place 2 on either side of the bomb where the seam is to give Mickey his ears.
    • You will have to hold it for at least 30 seconds before letting go or it will fall off)

    Variations

Mexican: Add a dash of cinnamon and cayenne to the filling.
Peppermint: Add crushed peppermint inside the chocolate bomb.
Peanut Butter: Add creamy peanut butter for some added yummy flavor.
    Oreos: Add crushed Oreos inside.
S’Mores: Add crushed graham crackers inside.
Sea Salt: This one pairs great with dark chocolate or peppermint.
Lucky Bombs: Add the marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal.

    • Let the chocolate harden before using.

Serve in a cup big enough to fit the Mickey Mouse Hot Chocolate Bomb.

How Much Milk to Pour Over Hot Cocoa Bombs

1 cup to 1 ½ cups of milk.

You can use any kind of milk – 2%, whole milk, soy milk, etc.

The less milk you add, the richer your drink will be.

Can I use water instead of milk for the chocolate bombs?

Yes! It’s just like any cocoa mix. It won’t be as creamy, but it will still be yummy to drink.

I’ve seen these everywhere. I even saw them at Costco, and they are flying off the shelf. They run anywhere from $4 to $8 each!! YIKES!

Luckily, these Mickey Mouse Hot Chocolate Bombs bring the Magical Kingdom into a cup.

Get the kids involved. They’ll love seeing Mickey come to life.
