    Ingredients

The ingredients needed to make Beef Fajitas labeled and sitting on a marble surface.
    • beef strips
    • ground cumin
    • ground oregano
    • chili powder (or red pepper flakes)
    • ground cayenne (optional)
    • salt
    • ground black pepper
    • oil – vegetable oil, olive oil, canola oil, or whatever type of oil you prefer.
    • white onion (or use red onions for more color)
    • finely minced garlic (or use garlic powder)
    • green bell peppers
    • red bell peppers
    • yellow bell pepper sliced
    • fresh lime juice

What makes flavorful steak fajitas is the mixture of spices used to season the thin slices of beef.

Fajita marinades are everywhere, but they require time. We’re going for an easy weeknight dinner here. Something that’ll get food on the table in under 25 minutes.

    Instructions

Beef strips ready to be seasoned in a glass bowl.
    • For best results, rinse the beef strips.
    • Pat dry well with paper towels.

Nowadays, you can find beef fajita strips at the grocery store which is really just sliced skirt steak or flank steak.

Otherwise, choose a beef cut and simply slice it up. Fajitas, in a nutshell, are thin strips of meat and peppers.

You can use the same cut of beef to make this Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry Recipe.

Seasoning the beef strips in a glass bowl to make Beef Fajitas.
    • Season the fajita meat with cumin, oregano, cayenne (if using), chili powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix everything to combine. Make sure the beef is coated well. Do this first so the meat rests while the other ingredients are prepped.

Swap out for a different protein. Chicken fajitas and shrimp fajitas are seasoned and made in the same way.

Please note: ground beef is never used to make fajitas.

Cooking strips of beef and peppers in a large pan.
    • In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat.
    • Add the seasoned sliced beef and cook.
    • Add the peppers, onion, and garlic.
    • Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, or until the peppers are soft.
    • Turn heat off and squeeze lime juice all over the beef and peppers.

To get the fajitas really tender, make sure the oil is nice and hot before adding the raw meat. This is what will create that sizzle!

I find it easier to cook this all in one large hot pan or a large heavy skillet.

Or, try making this on a sheet pan at 425 degrees. Cook for 25 minutes, or until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (medium) or 160 degrees F (well done).

    Pro Tip:

Save some for brunch. Chop into smaller pieces, warm it up in a skillet, and top with a sunny-side up egg. So delicious!

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do restaurants get fajitas to sizzle?

Restaurants serve fajitas in hot cast iron skillets. The same one used to cook the meat. They are sizzling because they are still cooking. To hear the sizzle, use a cast iron skillet and make sure it’s really hot before adding the beef.

    How to grill fajitas?

Preheat a grill to 375°F. Season the meat. Add beef to a hot grill and cook 6 to 8 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

    How to store leftovers?

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
