Cebollitas Asadas remind me of Sundays growing up.

Sunday asados (or barbecues) were a lot of fun growing up! Kids running around. My dad on the grill. Our family would come over. Los Panchos playing.

    On the menu, you’d find…

Grilled meat – chicken, beef, or both.
    Refried beans
    Mexican Rice
    Mexican Corn

    Tomato Molcajete Salsa
    Corn tortillas
    And these grilled Mexican onions

The bulb is bigger than regular green onions. You might see them labeled at the grocery store as Spring Onions or Cambray Onions.

When they are grilled, they are slightly sweet and make the best side dish to any backyard BBQ.

Raw cambray onions on a wooden surface.

    How to Make Them

    • Heat the grill.
    • Wash the Mexican onions.

Are grilled onions good for you?

Yes! Onions have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce cholesterol. Translation: they are good for your heart and can reduce high blood pressure.

    More Mexican Grilled Recipes:

    Grilled Pork Chops Adobo
    Pescado Zarandeado
    Salsa Borracha
    Pollo Adobado

Onions and cactus paddles grilling on the grill.

    • Pat dry the onions.
    • Then, brush with oil and place on the grill.

Regular green onions would take minutes on the grill, but because the bulb is bigger, they need more time to cook.

They will need a total of 20 minutes to fully cook. Turn them once to cook evenly on all sides.

What is the best onion for grilling?

Other than these Cambray Onions, you can also grill Walla Walla, Vidalia, or use wooden skewers to grill onions until they are tender. The skewers will prevent them from falling through the grate.

A collage showing lime and Maggi Jugo over the grilled onions.

    • Remove from the grill.
    • Drizzle with lime and Jugo Maggi.

This is very similar to how Chiles Toreados are made.

If you can’t find Jugo Maggi, use a couple of splashes of soy sauce. Let the onions sit in this sauce mixture for a few minutes to absorb the flavor.

    What is Jugo Maggi?

Maggi Jugo is a deeper, richer soy sauce. It’s salty and savory. When added to dishes, it gives a lot of flavor. Try it with beef.

Substitutions for Jugo Maggi: Worchestire Sauce or Soy Sauce.

Onions marinating on a white plate.

    Pro Tip:

They will get cold. Cover the onions with aluminum foil until ready to serve the rest of the food.

Some people do not like to eat the green ends. That is totally optional and up to you. When left on the grill for a long time, they become crispy.

    How Long Do They Last?

Cebollitas Asadas last up to 3 days in the fridge in an airtight, plastic container. The ends will lose some of their crispy texture, but the bulb will still be just as delicious.

    Ensalada de Coditos

These Cebollitas Asadas (or Mexican Grilled Onions) are a tasty and easy side dish. Try this recipe at your next BBQ. They’re sure to be a hit!
