Every good Mexican knows La Michoacana. It’s a chain that sells Mexican paletas (popsicles), agua frescas, corn, and more goodies. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than this yummy Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca.

Ingredients for Agua de Plátano

Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca is relatively easy to make too. All you need are bananas, sweetened condensed milk, powdered cinnamon, evaporated milk, and vanilla.

Bananas in a Blender

Start by placing the bananas in the blender. You don’t need to slice them. Just break them apart. If they’re turning brown, your agua fresca will be sweeter. Adjust the sweetened condensed milk as you see fit. You can also use regular yellow bananas.

Hand holding can of Nestle Carnation Evaporated Milk next to blender

Evaporated milk is an ingredient we commonly use in our Mexican dishes. It will give your Banana Agua Fresca, or Agua de Plátano, a delicious creamy consistency. You can also use heavy cream, or regular whole milk is fine too.

Hand holding can of sweetened condensed milk

As most of you know, I’m binational and spend a good deal of time in both US and Mexico. I bought this can of sweetened condensed milk in Mexico. Unfortunately, I can’t find this can size in the US. Measure out 3-4 tablespoons, depending on taste.

Teaspoon of ground cinnamon over blender

Cinnamon is one of those ingredients that I’m hardly ever without. A little goes a long way. My recipe asks for 1 teaspoon. You can add more or less depending on what your taste buds like.

Hand holding container of Vanilla next to blender

Pure vanilla extract will give your Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca, an amazing flavor. You can also do without, but personally, I love it. This is another Mexican product, but you can find it in the US. Yay!

Hand holding blender lid

Blend everything until smooth. Do you notice a pattern in our Mexican recipes? We really use our blenders. In fact, I have 5 blenders! Lol. Nope, not kidding you.

Banana mixture in a blender

This by itself is delicious! But, we’re not done yet… See the color? It’s almost a yellowish brown. When you add the water, it will get whiter.

Water in a pitcher

To a large pitcher, add 3 cups of water. Leave 1 cup of water aside. This is just in case Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca is too sweet and you want to thin it out.

Pouring banana mixture to the water pitcher

Add the banana mixture from the blender to the water and stir. Taste for good measure. If it’s too sweet, add more water. Remember that if you are serving it with ice cubes, they will melt and dilute the Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca.

Wooden spoon mixing agua fresca in a pitcher

For those of you 21 years and older, try adding some rum. It will be a-PEEL-ing, and you’ll go bananas for it. LOL.

Glass of Banana Agua Fresco Agua de Plátano, with ice and dusted off with ground cinnamon

Agua de Plátano, or Banana Agua Fresca, is a 100% times better than sodas or juice boxes loaded with sugar. Your kids will go ape over this drink. Enjoy!
