I love the food options in classy San Diego. There are some excellent restaurants- hole in the walls, fancy shmancy sit downs, gastropubs. One of the ones that surprised me recently was Donovan’s Steakhouse in the Gaslamp. It still has the white table cloths, impressive wine selection, and hearty steaks. This time, I didn’t go for dinner. Instead, I went for happy hour and found some unexpected good drinks and good eats. Of course, I had to share my experience with all of you.

Donovan’s Happy Hour from 4pm to 6pm

They have a great cocktail menu for happy hour. I’m a two-drink gal, and this is all I had. If you like your cocktails and can handle more than just two, hats off to you. You also can’t overlook their appetizers some of which are FREE. I’m sure we all like that price.

Grey Goose Pear Vodka Martini

The French Pear $9
Grey Goose Pear Vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, and Champagne. Sweet and chilled. So refreshing. It’s like lemonade but for grown ups.

dirty martini

You-Call-It-Martini
If you don’t find a cocktail you like on the menu, they have a You-Call-It-Martini. Here’s a dry martini also only $9 and not on their cocktail menu. Vodka, vermouth, brine from the olive jar, and a couple of stuffed olives. Happy hour indeed!

steak sandwiches and burritos as appetizer
Complimentary Appetizers
My favorite part of this happy: If you buy a drink at happy hour, you get a steak burrito or steak sandwich on the house. That’s right, for FREE. Think juicy, tender, flavorful steak sandwiches and burritos. It’s Donovan’s Steakhouse, after all. Can’t expect anything less than yummy steak. You still get the full, upscale Donovan’s experience without breaking the bank.

appetizers- Cajun lamb chop, giant shrimp cocktail, bacon wrapped scallops, Maryland-style crab cake, stuffed mushroom.
Other Appetizer Options:
You can get full just with the complimentary sandwiches and burritos. If that’s not something you’re interested in or want something a little lighter, they have other appetizers options. This is a sample of their best appetizers- Cajun lamb chop, giant shrimp cocktail, bacon wrapped scallops, Maryland-style crab cake, stuffed mushroom.

Party Planning:
If you’re looking for a larger venue, holiday parties or a special occasion, Donovan’s has 2
private dining rooms at the Gaslamp location that seat up to 42 guests. One of the things I learned is that you don’t have to stick to the menu. It is the same for parties. You can do a custom menu for your event.

Complimentary Appetizers?! That is craziness! I will have to stop in and grab a drink soon.
