Maybe it was her witty sense of humor or her ability to cook a sophisticated meal with ease. Or maybe you were too young to remember Julia Child, but you saw a movie on her life and thought she rocked it in the kitchen. Whatever your idea of Julia Child is, she is unquestionably a culinary legend. In San Diego, there isn’t a better place to celebrate her 103rd birthday than the opulent Grant Grill inside the historic US Grant Hotel.
This month of August, the Grant Grill is hosting a prix fixe menu called “Cooking with Julia.” This Julia Child-inspired dinner was put together by Executive Chef Mark Kropczynski who work alongside the culinary icon. Like this roasted tomato, avocado, and chile-rubbed ribeye steak with just a little sprinkle of sea salt. A perfect bite. Less is more sometimes.
Santa Barbara Spot Prawns with sliced red onions and roma tomatoes. This dish reminded me of my mother and her tomato dishes. It has that Provence feel without anyone asking you to practice your high school French. An understanding of comfort food with a seafood quality.
Grilled lamb tenderloin with baby root vegetables, and pumpkin seeds for texture. Rustic and earthy in flavor. “C’est delicieux!” If that’s hard for you to pronounce, just say “Plus encore,” or “more please.” And if the waiter STILL doesn’t understand. Point at your empty plate, and hope they bring you more. If not, they’ll bring you halibut…
Local Halibut. The execution of this dish is very clever. The halibut medallions are wrapped in thin asparagus and served over creamy polenta. Add some sherry morel sauce, and you’ve got a rich, delectable dish. Move over Brad Pitt, I might be dreaming about this morel sauce tonight.
Meanwhile back at the mango beignet… Juicy mango wrapped in beignet batter. What’s not to love. Top it with some ice cream. A tasty treat that’s yummy and sweet.
