Fishing nets hanging on the wall. Submarine windows serving as picture frames. Mariscos El Pulpo is the underwater “Lost City” of Atlantis found in Barrio Logan. My, oh my how the area has changed! The restaurant recently opened and is serving up some Mexican seafood classics north of the Baja California Peninsula. As a Mexican and a foodie, I had to check this place out.
Mermaid Margarita. A “skinny cocktail” using agave nectar and ultimately less calories. Who does not like that?! With spicy Tajin on the rim, this would be perfect for a warm, summer day or any day ending with Y.
Pomegranate Mojito. Minty goodness with lime and pomegranate juice. Refreshing and not too sweet. Such a great combo! Definitely worth ordering at Happy Hour, but then again, why limit happy to one hour? Psst. They have killer Happy Hour specials.
The bar is an ocean blue and embedded with shells. It doubles as an oyster shucking station. We only ordered a half size, but they’re cheaper by the dozen (minus Steve Martin). The saltiness from the oyster, a spicy Mexican sauce, topped with creamy avocado… Need I say more?
Shrimp al Mojo de Ajo. Grilled garlic shrimp, refried Mexican beans, and rice. Wrap it up in a warm tortilla, and it’s a Mexican party in your mouth. It’ll make you start hearing a mariachi band play. Well, there actually IS a mariachi band that plays here on certain days of the week. Call ahead and ask for details.
Pulpo al Mojo de Ajo. I had to try something with “pulpo,” or octopus. I was at Mariscos El Pulpo, after all. Slightly salty and slightly chewy as octopus can be. This is served with two tortillas for a reason. There’s enough meat for two tacos. When you order, keep that in mind. Besides, you can always order another one should you feel hungry.
The best thing I ate? Shrimp ceviche! So fresh. So delicious. Shrimp ceviche is what I’ll order the next time I’m there. Yes, there will be a second and third time and a fourth. This place reminds me of that weekend getaway trip I took to Ensenada. Great memories revisited just a bridge ride away…
