I can’t tell you how much I love my local liquor store. They have a great wine selection. I was there the other day, and I saw Cavit Pinot Grigio 2012 with a note. It said, “No.1 Italian Wine in America.” The guys behind the counter (yes, they know me by now) confirmed this. They said, they go through cases of it every week and can’t keep it in stock. No other recommendation needed. I made my purchase eager to find out what all the fuss was about.
Cavit Pinot Grigio 2012($8.99)
Pinot grigio as it’s called in Italy (or Pinot Gris) is perfect for warm summer nights. FYI, pinot grigio and pinot gris are the same wine, same grape, just different name. The ones from Italy are normally dry, rich, full of pears, lemon and apple. In Oregon and Alsace, pinot grigio is dry, oaky, and more citrusy. I would have guessed Cavit Pinot Grigio 2012 to be more Oregonian than Italian because of the citrus notes. The color is straw gold with a hint of green. A floral and fruity bouquet that is soft and pleasing. The taste is dry, crisp, and clean. Refreshing acidity, but for me, it lacked the Italian character that is common in their pinot grigio. The finish was pleasant but unforgettable. I would pair it with a cream pasta dish or fresh seafood. It definitely needs to be chilled.
In the end, this is an OK wine. It didn’t blow my mind or send me rushing back to the liquor store to buy more. I guess I have to ask you as my readers: If Cavit Pinot Grigio 2012 is the No.1 Italian wine in the US, why do you like it? My guess is the price, and since we tend to buy wine based on price, this is a good buy. However, I wouldn’t take it to a friend’s house who goes wine tasting every weekend. I probably won’t purchase it again, but maybe for a party with a tight wine budget. However, I will say this: I still would try their other wine varietals. It’s happened many times. I don’t like 5 wines from the same winemaker, but the 6th wine is amazing. You just never know…
Cheers! Santé! Salud!
