A home away from home, Casanova Brothers Pizza is where “Cheers” meets “New York Italian” in the Arizona desert. It is located in a small shopping center in family-friendly Gilbert. With its informal dining and extremely reasonable prices, it is no wonder why this restaurant ranks high amongst the locals.
Ran by two brothers – Tony and Michael- the restaurant offers an extensive menu of Italian favorites. From Eggplant Parmigiana to Calzones, Casanova Brothers Pizza proudly displays several signed pictures of former, celebrity patrons.
Tony, one of the owners, greeted us and made us feel right at home. He even introduced us to other people at the restaurant. When he heard it was our first time at Casanova Brothers Pizza, we were offered free garlic knots to nibble on as we studied the menu.
Pizza slices are served all day long. This pizza slice here is of ricotta cheese topped with sausage and spinach. There is a great deal of satisfaction about biting into delicious ricotta and tasting the saltiness from the sausage. Mmmm…
The pasta dishes come with bread and a fresh, crisp Italian salad.
A big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. Need I say more? The sauce was robust and full of flavor. The meatballs are without a doubt some of the best I’ve ever tasted. Not too zesty and very filling.
I would come back to Arizona just for this meatball sandwich. A savory and “brag-worthy” sandwich that is meaty and topped with ooey gooey cheese in a toasted bun. It has that OMG effect. It’s the kind of sandwich you dream about after a bad meal… or is that just me? (smiling sheepishly)
Throughout our meal, Tony came over several times just to check on us. We were given chocolate chip cannolis compliments of the house. Yes, they were fantastic. Sweet, creamy, decadent. I wanted to lick my plate.
I was convinced Tony knew I was a food writer. Maybe someone in the back was checking their Instagram account? Nope, he did this to everyone. He had no idea that I would be writing this article. A philosopher and restaurant owner, he later told us that he treats people the way he wants to be treated. It’s all about people skills and doing what’s right. He is not in the restaurant business to make money but because he loves it. This exceptional philosophy in life and business mixed with authentic Italian fare left me thoroughly impressed with Casanova Brothers Pizza. Without a doubt, this is one of my new favorite restaurants.
