The other day, I was invited to attend an event hosted by the California Grapes Commission with spokesperson and TV personality Chef Marcela Valladolid. She prepared a few yummy dishes for us, and in the process, we learned that you can do more with grapes than just make wine.
What kind of grape is your favorite? Chef Marcela said she often has white grapes on hand. Me, I like them all, but I also lean towards the white. Really, it’s not my decision. Little Red often chooses for us.
Black Grape Margarita
What’s a grape affair without some “adult drinks?” This one uses black seedless grapes, tequila from Chef Marcela Valladolid’s own brand, and some sweet and sour mix. It was fresh and just a little sweet. I love that it’s not too sweet! There were grape skins in the drink which gave it some extra color. #CAGrapes
Rosemary Grape Martini
Almost too pretty to drink. Almost… 😉 Vodka, green grape juice, rosemary. Translation: DELICIOUS!
This is a close up picture of the salmon tacos Chef Marcela prepared for us, using California grapes. She explained how the grape pico de gallo was made, using a combination of red and green seedless grapes, pickled red onion, and jalapeno. Then topped with cilantro. I know it sounds strange: a grape pico de gallo, but it’s actually really good. The grapes gave it a freshness that I didn’t expect.
Grilled Antipasto Skewers
I have never grilled grapes. Have you? I had never even thought of it until that day. The shrimps were YUM YUM especially with prosciutto. Hello goodness! The marinade was garlicky with vinegar and rosemary.
Banh Mi Flatbread with Grapes
Oh yeah. Now we’re talking! Think lemongrass, garlic, chicken, soy sauce, carrots, grapes, cilantro, jalapeno… all ready to be devoured by little ol’ me. 🙂
Chef Marcela is adorable. She’s itty bitty and beautiful in person. I won a bottle of her tequila! I foresee a Margarita Monday happening at my house soon.
