Brandy Alejandro

Brandy Alejandro is a cocktail that takes me back. When I was a kid at Christmas visiting Mexico, it wasn’t as acceptable as it is now for women to drink. I don’t think my grandmother ever sipped on alcohol. To this day, my mother still refuses to go near it. My curiosity was peaked because of this, and I partly blame my upbringing for my fascination with wine. My dad once (or many times) gave me something to drink. Ooof! I hope my mom never reads this. He used to take me with the men to make apple wine, using the apples from my family’s ranch. I remember my dad, uncle, and grandfather giving me a “milk” drink. I had no idea that it also had brandy. Brandy Alejandro was sweet, and what little kid doesn’t like sweet milk drinks? That seems like so long ago…

Right around Three Kings Day, we would pack everything up and return back to California. We would hug my aunts and cousins goodbye. Kisses and “bendiciones” (or blessings) from my beloved grandmother. Our lives resumed in fast-paced Los Angeles. I can’t think of a better drink than Brandy Alejandro to go with a slice of rosca (kings cake).
