Bionicos are Mexican fruit bowls made of fresh fruit covered in a dreamy cream sauce and topped with granola. YES PLEASE!
I first saw this at a juice shop in Tijuana, but they’re originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Commonly found in street food carts.
It’s a delicious dessert, but it’s light enough to eat for breakfast.
Some places make the sauce very sweet. This recipe, though, is like Goldie Locks.
It’s just right!
How to Make the Cream Sauce
- Add the yogurt, crema mexicana (or Mexican crema), sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla to a small bowl.
- Whisk until smooth.
- Set aside until ready to use.
Pro Tip:
If you can’t find crema mexicana, substitute for creme fraiche, sour cream, plain yogurt, even cream cheese. We are using DAIRY products here.
Be very cautious of any refrigeration that needs to happen.
Specifically, if you are making this dessert ahead of time, place it in the fridge so the cream won’t go bad.
Or swap out the cream sauce and learn how to make marshmallow fluff. It’d go great with this recipe.
How to Assemble
- Chop up the fruit.
- Add the fruit to individual bowls and cover with the cream sauce.
- Top with granola and shredded coconut.
The cream sauce and granola are a must when making a bionico recipe. You might see honey or cajeta drizzled on top.
What kinds of fruit to use varies from place to place and on seasonal fresh fruit.
Use your favorite fruit. It’s totally up to you and your taste buds.
Other fruits you can use:
Pineapple
Strawberries
Mango
Watermelon
Orange
Grapes
Seriously, it’s whatever fruit your heart desires.
The Name Game: You might also see this dish referred to as “bionico de fruta,” “bioncio bowls,” or just plain, “bionico.”
