Hi! I’m Maggie, the cook, writer, taste tester, photographer, and videographer behind In Mama Maggie’s Kitchen.
I was born in the US, but my parents are from Durango, Mexico. Food was and continues to be the center of our lives and our culture. I’m a native Spanish speaker, but I learned English as a kid growing up in LA.
My passion is Mexican food. Each time I cook, I want to feel like I’m back at my mom’s house, or my grandmother is cooking for me. I want to bring that experience, the true flavors of Mexico north of the border and into your kitchen.
Throughout my life, I’ve lived in different parts of Mexico. I have traveled to 22 of the 31 states in Mexico and sampled the unique foods of each regions.

My recipes contain detailed step-by-step instructions, photos, and in several cases, instructional videos that will ensure you success in your own kitchen.
My goal is to help you recreate the recipes on my site and learn a bit about my Mexican culture.

That’s me in Durango, Mexico. I’ve spent a lot of time in DGO, and it holds a special place in my heart. I had my quinceañera at the cathedral of Durango on the same altar my parents were married. Most of my family still lives there.
Southern Mexico is totally different from Northern Mexico. Once upon a time, I lived in Tabasco, Mexico. Cocoa trees, monkeys, I even went to school with people who only spoke the native language of “Chontal.”
Currently, I live in San Diego County and go back and forth to Baja California, Mexico. We even drove down the Baja California Peninsula, visiting remote towns in Mexico. On that trip, I touched whales!! Talk about a life changing experience!
Making regular border crossings keeps me connected to the sights, the smells and the authentic foods of Mexico. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
I’m married to the funniest and smartest man in the world. He has embraced my Mexican culture and knows enough Spanish to be dangerous. LOL.
My son is a ginger redhead with freckles, green eyes, and simply, the most wonderful boy ever! We speak in Spanish at home. I believe that it is extremely important that he knows where we come from, our people, and I pray that one day, he too will continue our Mexican traditions.
We travel a lot in my family – both internationally and in the U.S. I’m sure that there’s an unpacked suitcase sitting in one of our closets.
Fun Facts about Maggie Unzueta:
- I live in a small and beautiful town called Coronado. It’s an “island” across the bay from downtown San Diego.
- I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area but left over 20 years ago.
- I have studied 6 languages as well as 3 musical instruments.
- I am addicted to learning new things in a totally nerdy way. What subatomic particles of matter move the slowest and why … that’s next on my list!
- I’m a complete goofball. Joking around is how I roll.
